This month on the farm
Rather than treating every animal as routine, we send dung samples to be checked for worm eggs and only treat when it’s needed. That keeps the medicines working for longer.
This is called tupping. Ewes carry their lambs for about five months, so autumn tupping means lambs in spring, when the grass is growing.
We feel along each animal’s back and ribs to check it’s not too thin or too fat: a quick way to see the feeding is right.
Goats carry their kids for about five months, so autumn mating means kids in spring.

A real mix of animals
Farming explained
Honey bees don’t hibernate. They huddle together and shiver to keep warm, living on the honey they stored in summer.
Every sheep, goat, pig and cow is identified, so we know where every animal has been. It keeps food safe and stops disease spreading.
Hens need long days to lay well, and they lay most in their first couple of years. Here’s how a hen’s laying changes through the year and through her life.
